The 2005 New Zealand Unclimbed Tibet Expedition.

There are few areas remaining in the world that have yet to feel the tread of human feet. In the Nyainqentangla East, a range of mountains bigger than the Southern Alps of New Zealand, only two peaks have ever been climbed. The high mountains and glaciers that surround the Lawa Valley in south-eastern Tibet are, for all intents and purposes, barely visited blanks on the map. In 2004 we set out to explore this mountain wonderland but were stymied at the last hurdle when our permits were cancelled as we were getting on the plane to Lhasa. This year we're heading back there, hoping to explore the glaciers and attempt the first ascent of the enigmatic Birutaso (6691m). The Tibetan Holy Mountain Nenang (6870m), has never even been seen up close from the west. If granted permission we aim to explore the western approaches to this mountain. As always, we expect that the local Tibetan people will be a major highlight of our time in the Lawa Valley .
